Environmental Management Solutions

Posted under environment

There was a time when environmental management was the domain of politicians, scientists and earth lovers, but is now something that has been adopted within industry and commerce on a widespread basis. Up until the latter third of the last century the concept had been largely ignored, but is now being recognized in no uncertain terms as we come to grips with the challenge facing us all.

For the longest time, big business decisions were based on how much better and how much bigger we could become and driven by consumption needs. Fossil fuels were seen as the best way forward to create energy for our burgeoning needs. Sustainability was far from people’s minds and our environment was constantly ravaged as we sought to go the extra mile.

Following the introduction of the Clean Water Act and the Clean Air Act in the late 1960s, environmental management solutions became more widespread. When the International Standardization Organization introduced its ISO 14001 standard, following closely on the heels of the European Eco-management and Audit Scheme, everything took off. Now a series of criteria had been laid down and it was the right thing to do for organizations to adopt the standards and for others to see that they were doing so.

As it is recognized that certain businesses that are just starting off or who will operate in difficult environments could, together with emerging countries, be adversely affected if they tried to adopt the full standards as set out by ISO 14001. Other environmental management solutions have arisen, therefore, to take into account these varying circumstances.

Environmental management solutions have been put forward by the United Nations based on a natural capital approach. This advocates using accounting reform and the adoption of the triple bottom-line philosophy, to take into account ecological and social performance in addition to traditional outputs.

Some proponents of alternative environmental management solutions advocate self-regulation as a better way to proceed rather than through enforced compliance, auditory checks and other standards. As an example, consumable and durable products would then be seen as distinct from “unsalables,” otherwise classified as toxic products.

Every member of an organization has a significant role to play in the world of environmental management solutions, as each department has its own contribution within the overall lifecycle of the organization in general. As more emphasis is placed on the reduction of greenhouse gases, this approach is being widely adopted.

Environmental management solutions can form part of a wider goal to help ensure that an organization achieves sustainability. As particular focus is placed on reducing a carbon footprint, the organization must also ensure that it is environmentally efficient as a whole. Wastage at all levels will not be tolerated from a societal or economic point of view, with the twin threats of reputational harm and regulatory penalty ahead.

California Water Legislation Stalls

Posted under environment

Water is a precious commodity and its management is something that we must all take very seriously indeed. While we know that new laws are required, it is not always easy to reach a compromise and California water legislation is a case in hand. Corporate chiefs are looking with interest at what is happening in Sacramento as the issue of water management is squarely at the top of the list as a business seeks sustainability.

The United States as a whole has often looked to its most populous state when it comes to changes in the way that we address water management. Numerous attempts have been made to pass water legislation in California, as that state’s booming population growth and subtle changes in climate have forced engagement. However, in May of 2009 the most far-reaching effort yet was forced to stall.

Considerable opposition to legislation was put forward by politicians in Sacramento, especially as it was estimated that it would cost over $12 billion to implement. Although changes were necessary, many pointed to the huge budgetary shortfalls in the state, combined with the adverse effects of the global recession.

As it appears that California water legislation is facing a rocky future, the country as a whole faces even bigger issues regarding overall sustainability, resource usage and energy production. All these factors combine to have a significant effect on climate change in our future and society demands that organizations take full responsibility for their part.

Water management is a significant issue as it is very complex. Many different interests throughout society need to have their input, including businessmen, scientists, economists, politicians, environmentalists and consumers. The Sierra Club was one of the main objectors when it came to legislation, especially insofar as it would affect the delicate ecosystems of that part of the state.

Most people are aware that a status quo situation is not sustainable, especially when it comes to California water legislation, which must be passed in some shape or form as part of a growing awareness within that state toward environmental issues. California has long led other states of the union in environmental issues and the models have in certain instances being taken up by the Environmental Protection Agency for adoption nationwide.

It is now clear that waste in any form will not be tolerated by society as we move forward and this is especially true when it comes to the issue of water management. As such, each organization must ensure that it is sustainable and has taken clear steps to contain any overuse of this precious commodity.

Global climate change, caused in large part by the adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions, will lead to a net rise in the average temperature of the earth. As a consequence of this, weather patterns and rainfall rates will be adversely affected and will lead to an even more critical analysis of our needs in relation to water consumption.

California Water Legislation Is a Tough Call

Posted under environment

While we know that water management is an issue that we all need to address, sharp divides can often come to the fore, as is the case with current California water legislation which appears to be stalling in Sacramento. Each organization has to exhibit sustainability these days and the handling of water as a commodity is part of this. Its management must maintain a top priority at boardroom level.

Of all the states within the USA, the water management problem is particularly acute within California. Booming population growth and climatic challenges have led to many attempts to pass California water legislation, which could then be viewed as a model for other states. In May 2009, the most ambitious plan ever to reform this issue in the most populous state seemed to flounder, however.

It seems the politicians in Sacramento underestimated opposition to water legislation which would cost an estimated $12 billion to enforce. The sweeping changes contained within were seen by many as necessary, but in a state which is already racked by budget shortfalls and in the face of recession, progress was very difficult.

As it appears that California water legislation is facing a rocky future, the country as a whole faces even bigger issues regarding overall sustainability, resource usage and energy production. All these factors combine to have a significant effect on climate change in our future and society demands that organizations take full responsibility for their part.

We need to be aware of our water consumption and usage habits, especially in the light of our recent awakening to the significantly adverse effects of greenhouse gas emissions. These emissions will cause global climate change and a net increase in the Earth’s average temperatures. This is certain to lead to a change in weather patterns and altered rainfall rates leading to more pressure on water management.

Waste Management Statistics Encourage Efficiencies

Posted under environment

Waste management is taking on a bigger role within all levels of society. In the United States, federal programs seek to reduce our reliance on traditional waste management methods and are replaced with more preferred initiatives. At state level, the problem is more acute with a number of individual states reporting that they are nearing capacity in terms of available resources. While waste management statistics are much improved over the last 20 years, there is a long way to go.

We need to look beyond the government when it comes to waste management. Each organization has to be acutely aware of the repercussions of its entire lifecycle operation. This includes preproduction and end of life. It looks as if legislation will, in future, punish an organization that is seen to be efficient and displays waste management statistics that are higher than average.

Not only can inefficient processing of waste be harmful to our immediate environment, it can have a major affect on overall climate change as well. Landfills are now seen as being the least appropriate solutions for us, especially as large amounts of methane occur during this process. This particular gas is more than 70 times more powerful than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere and as such plays significantly in the fight against global warming.

If we look at waste management statistics closely, we can see that the majority of waste is still sent to landfills. Even though the number of locations has dropped off, the existing places have increased in size and capacity. Incineration is not much better an alternative, as nitrous oxide is a byproduct.

Legislation aimed at forcing emitters to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases that they are responsible for will actively encourage organizations to reduce their carbon footprint. Part of this process will require them to analyze waste at all levels of the operation and a reduction is likely as efficiencies are realized.

The Environmental Protection Agency produces waste management statistics telling us that a staggering 200 million tons of solid waste is produced in this country per annum. Each member of society and each organization must take an element of responsibility for this, as when broken down it can be seen that this equates to 4.4 pounds of waste per person per day.

Conventional methods of waste management are known to have significant adverse effects on our overall health, the condition of our waterways and the long-term degradation of our atmosphere. The traditional methods often involve additional carbon emission issues due to the very collection and transportation of the material. Much more emphasis should be placed on recycling and reuse.

As each element of an organization’s supply chain has the capability of producing excess, senior management must analyze waste management statistics closely. Efficiencies must now be demanded and must be followed through to ensure compliance.

California Water Legislation Is a Tough Call

Posted under environment

Problems facing us in relation to overall water management again came into sharp focus recently when a plan to deal with California water legislation met problems in Sacramento. Water remains a precious commodity, an issue that is squarely on a list of every organization’s sustainability plan. As efficiencies are demanded within all levels, water management takes a priority position

Across the United States, the issue of water management is very important, not the least of which within the state of California. Over the years, subtle climatic changes and a booming population migration have led to numerous attempts to pass California water legislation. The latest and most far-reaching attempt in May of 2009 was to meet considerable opposition, however.

Politicians in Sacramento seek to pass legislation as part of a sweeping reform of overall water policy. Such reform was not without cost, of course as it is estimated that $12 billion would be required to service the projects. In recessionary times and in a state faced by crippling budgetary shortfalls, these economic details were part of the overall problem.

Failing efforts to pass California water legislation point to an overall problem within the country as increasing production and a higher demand combine with projections of climate change to paint a grim picture. As the problem of climate change itself becomes more acute and moves further within the crosshairs of society, organizations find themselves under considerable pressure to justify both their energy usage and their resource usage.

Status quo is not sustainable, especially in a state that has long been seen as a champion of such causes nationwide. Water management is an essential part of an organization’s drive for sustainability. We can see that society will not tolerate waste at any level anymore and this is especially true for this commodity. Each organization has to address its entire function and ensure that not a drop is wasted.

If predictions are correct, it seems that global climate change caused in large part by greenhouse gas emissions will have a net effect of raising the earth’s temperature. In spite of increasing efforts to reverse this trend, it is likely that changes in weather patterns and altered rainfall rates will in turn spur a far more critical analysis of all water consumption and use habits.

Greenhouse Laws are Overdue

Posted under environment

Since the dawn of the industrial age, we have come a long way and have made significant technological moves forward in what is essentially a short period of time. Once we had discovered that the fossil fuels that we find all around us could be converted to energy and thus make our way of life that much better, we did not look back. However, 300 years later we can now see how much damage the conspicuous consumption of these fuels has caused and this has lead to the call for greenhouse laws to try and reverse the damage to our environment and to stave off the potential for significant climate change.

The byproduct of using fossil fuels for energy production (and subsequent use and consumption) was a significant release of damaging gases to the environment. Large volumes of these gases caused a warming effect in the atmosphere and over time a considerable imbalance in the natural scheme of things. As a society, we must reverse this trend and this has led to the introduction of greenhouse laws to control the dangerous greenhouse gases.

Greenhouse laws recognize that carbon dioxide and carbon dioxide equivalent gases are very dangerous and can cause significant temperature changes and adverse effects on weather and all forms of life. The laws being put in place aim to force the biggest emitters of gases, the largest companies to cut back and to seek alternative measures of energy generation and production.

The United Kingdom is one of the first countries to put in place mandatory laws, requiring the largest companies to cut back as part of legislation that will come into effect in 2010 and 2011. From that time on, the British government has set a goal of reducing carbon emissions by as much as 80% by the time we get to the year 2050.

A cunning “cap and trade” scheme will effectively force large emitters of carbon gases to reduce their figures, as a consequence of a value being placed on carbon itself. The scheme is part of the greenhouse laws being introduced in Britain and once the administration sets an overall limit on the total amount of gases that are permissible, market-driven forces will take care of the rest.

The British Carbon Reduction Commitment is a major step by a government and is a realization that large emitters of carbon gases will not act sufficiently through goodwill alone. Up until this point, mandatory greenhouse laws have not been tried, but it is felt that this is the best way to address the overall climate problem.

While many scientists and environmentalists have been preaching to politicians and society in general about the problem for some time, it has only been in very recent years that any real action has been taken. The Kyoto Protocol was groundbreaking in the late 90s when many countries agreed that action needed to be taken, but little tangible has been done since then. Greenhouse laws forcing mandatory participation will undoubtedly become more common.

There is considerable pressure on the United States to take some form of leadership role. Up until this point, various excuses have been given by the US administration and while the Congress is debating its own greenhouse laws, there seems some doubt as to whether they will soon be passed into law, as seen in the UK.

The Environment is Relying on a Cap and Trade Carbon System

Posted under environment

We have come to realize that it is time to turn our attention to reparation, rather than to continue our conspicuous consumption of energy and fossil fuels. We can now see what damage has been caused to our environment due to this excess consumption and must make sure that we do not further contribute. Over the decades, greenhouse gas emissions have combined to present a significant threat to our very future.

While the majority of us can agree that something needs to be done about greenhouse gas damage to our environment and the adverse climate effects, it will almost certainly take legal action on the behalf of governments to make any change whatsoever. Some are already moving in this direction, as in the United Kingdom a cap and trade carbon system has been introduced to force the largest consumers to cut back on their conventional methods and their output of these dangerous gases.

The cap and trade carbon system recently introduced in the UK is known as the Carbon Reduction Commitment and the legislation is aimed at the largest producers. Over a period of time a limit is to be placed on the amount of carbon emissions considered safe and each individual organization will have to trade allowances with the government to be able to emit carbon gases at all.

A cap and trade carbon system is a development of a scheme that has been in existence for some time now. The concept of setting a limit and forcing those consumers to trade in the marketplace to achieve overall reduction is not a new one, but the establishment of a commodity price for carbon emissions is. Many eyes are on the British initiative to see how it works, as it is likely to be adopted in similar format in many other countries.

The British government has decided that approximately 5,000 companies in the country are major producers of greenhouse gases due to their consumption of energy. Within a couple of years, each of these companies will be required to actively reduce their carbon footprint as part of the cap and trade carbon system. Those that do not, will find that they face an increasing cost as they purchase their carbon allowances and will also find that their underperformance will be communicated to society as a whole.

The Carbon Reduction Commitment has set goals of reducing the overall level of emissions each year up until 2050, by which time the intention is that carbon emissions will have been reduced by 80%. It is felt that this kind of aggressive action is necessary to ensure that even more serious and potentially devastating damage to our environment and climate is contained.

The cap and trade carbon system adopted by the British may well appear in the United States as well, as legislation being considered in mid to late 2009 seeks to adopt a similar program.

Some critics maintain that a cap and trade carbon system is not the right approach, but it is unrealistic to expect individuals or corporations to take the degree of initiative required to make fundamental changes without such governmental interaction.

Home Water Purifiers And Filters Keep Your Family Healthy

Posted under environment

There are many home water purifiers and filters being sold today. Choosing the right brand can be difficult and confusing. The prices cause even more confusion. Whats the difference between a $40 system and an $800 system? Thats the price range that you will see. Heres what you do and dont need when it comes to water purification.

Ill start with some of the things that you dont need. You dont need a bunch of expensive Japanese rocks. The claims made by the company that includes them are unverifiable.

Well water can be some of the hardest water to get the contaminants out of because there are so many. Most people will not do any research and will just get a filtering system thinking that are all the same. However, they are not because some filtering systems only get certain contaminants out, where the more expensive ones are better to treat things like well water.

Water does have contaminants but also has minerals that your body needs to keep healthy. So you have to be careful as to what youre filtering out because you will want to filter out the bad but at the same time keep the good in.

There are a lot of people out there that swear by tap water straight from the faucet at your house. However, public water that gets filtered through your cities filtering plant can carry quite a few different bacteria and contaminants. Because of the amount of water that flows through the systems everyday there is no possible way that they can get all the contaminants out of the water.

There are a lot of different things that can contaminate your fresh water supply. Most of these you would never know because most people have not taken the time to read up on the things that have been tested and found in their water. Such things have been found in towns water supplies like Alachlor, lindane, and artrazine, which when read if you are not an expert you have probably never hear of any of these. Truth is that these names are commonly found in fertilizer for lawn care experts, and chemicals for farming crops.

In recent news stories, we were informed that prescription drugs were found in tested supplies around the country. We were also informed that facilities are not required to publish the results of these tests. They believe that the public would not understand the results and might overreact. The only action that is necessary is to install a filter on your kitchen sink that will remove these drugs.

There is another type of contaminant that has been found in water is actually caused by the treatment methods themselves. The chemicals that have been used for disinfecting cause the formation of cancer causing compounds known as THMs or trihalomethanes.

The big difference in the more expensive brands of home water purifiers is what all the water filtering systems gets rid of. Most of your more expensive brands of water filters remove these THM’s, where the less expensive brands only reduce the chlorine.

As you can see making sure that you safeguard your water supply is very important and you need to do everything you can these days to protect your health. The best thing for you to do is to make sure that you do your research, find out whats in your water, and get the best filtering system you can for your home.

Greenhouse Laws are Introduced

Posted under environment

A little under 300 years ago, the industrial age was upon us. We were soon to discover that we could use fossil fuels that were seemingly in abundance all around us to produce energy forms and from there could really develop our lives and society. It is true that we have made significant technological advances since that time, but have also become aware of the damage that the conspicuous use of these fuels has caused. As a result, greenhouse laws will soon come into play to help constrain the consumption that has got us into trouble over all this time. Emissions caused by the burning of these fossil fuels have the potential to cause catastrophic damage to our environment unless something is done.

Little did we realize as the decades went by and as we became more and more reliant on fossil fuels for our energy, that the byproduct of energy generation, production and usage was the release of damaging gases, which in large volumes created a warming effect in the atmosphere. We now realize that we must do something to severely curtail this problem and greenhouse laws are now being introduced to cut down on emissions of greenhouse gases.

Carbon dioxide equivalent gases are the main target of greenhouse laws as these products are very dangerous. A threat exists to all forms of life on the planet, as patterns change and weather events intensify. Those who are deemed to be the largest culprits, the biggest emitters of gases will be in the crosshairs of this new legislation and they will be forced to seek alternative methods of energy production.

Mandatory laws are going to come into place in the United Kingdom in 2010 and 2011, requiring major companies to cut back on carbon emissions. The UK government is one of the first to introduce such legislation and has a goal of reducing emissions by as much as 80% by the time we get to 2050.

The scheme is part of the greenhouse laws being introduced in Britain and once the administration sets an overall limit on the total amount of gases that are permissible, market-driven forces will take care of the rest.

Unfortunately, goodwill alone is not enough to prompt major emitters of carbon to alter their ways of doing business. The British Carbon Reduction Commitment is one of the first steps in a government intervention. By structuring an approach this way, it is felt that the new greenhouse laws will have a great effect on the overall problem facing the climate.

Environmentalists and scientists have long said that we need to take a serious look at the problem of climate change, although it has only been in recent times that governments have come on board. In the 90s, the Kyoto Protocol was the first significant step in the right direction but many countries did not actively follow up on their initial enthusiasm. To make any real changes work, mandatory greenhouse laws will undoubtedly be very likely.

There is considerable pressure on the United States to take some form of leadership role. Up until this point, various excuses have been given by the US administration and while the Congress is debating its own greenhouse laws, there seems some doubt as to whether they will soon be passed into law, as seen in the UK.
