How to Build a Solar Panel - Part 1 of 3 (New)step by step buying everything off ebay
Posted under solar panel power by soloarpowerhomeadminAffordablesolarframes.com Mark Patrick of Affordable Solar Frames shows you how to build your own solar panel from scratch. This video will provide you with the materials you need and a step by step process to build your own solar frame at home at a very discounted price, with better quality.
No , because the plexiglass expands more in the sun than the cells. This will cause the cells to crack.
Why Can`t i use Plexiglass? Thanks.
great teacher l like u explanation
@jmugrad1 Hello. Go to ebay. I offer all sizes. Search solar frames and look for 36-5×5. Mark
If you are using 36 A Grade 5×5 Monocrystalline PV Solar Cells 2.8 Watts,
what would the size of the frame and the glass be?
Thanks
@jmugrad1 The glass size is 26 1/2″ x 32″. The frame size is 26 1/2″ x 32 3/4″ It is for 36-3×6 cells.
Brian
What is the frame and glass size you are using on this video?
Thanks
Ecinele
Master, th for your time….
@Knockreaghimages Well the mono is one crystalline and the poly is many crystalline. The mono will last longer. They will both work.
Hi Mark, Brilliant Video. Am going to give it a shot. I got monocrystalline cells. Whats the difference between mono and poly? Thanks
@Engar92 Hello. The 6010 will use the same amount around .5kg
Doh! Now I have an ugly EVA laminate roll door stop. 6010 seems much more reasonable in price than Slygar. How much do you use on a 36 piece 3×6 panel? It seems to come in much larger quantities so it suggests it takes more per panel? Thank you for sharing your experience and saving me from mistakes!
@Engar92 I have tried the EVA several ways. If you use a heat gun it shrinks fast and breaks the cells. I have also tried it in a oven with presure like a sandwish and it had millions of air bubbles. You have to have a laminating machine in a vacume chamber. The EVA does not last. On the news last week they did a report about cheep laminate panels out of china. After a few years in the sun they seperated. I use dow 6010 now, it is easer to use and cost a little less. Mark
@Engar92 I do not think that is a good Idea. I think you will have a moisture problem and the cells will crack on the flimsy tedlar.
Before I found your videos and learned about Slygar I found directions to use EVA (laminating sheets) and a heat gun to encapsulate the cells. Ever tried it? I already bought it so giving it a go soon. If it works it is about 1/20th the cost of Slygar.
Do you think it might work to put down a tedlar backing with a bead of silicone around it and apply the sylgard with the cells face up? I am building panels for the top of a cargo trailer and want to use plexiglass for added safety and durability. Not having cells attached to it would avoid cracking them from unequal expansion. Thank you for any thoughts and experience you can share.
@jmugrad1 Hello. Yes I am alternating soldering the wires on the positive side and on the negative.
Hey
Don’t you have to alternate soldering the wires on the positive side and on the negative side of each cell?
It seems from your video that you soldered all your wires on the negative side and then connected each column of cells by soldering on the positive side. Is this correct?
If so, doesn’t this reduce the amount of energy you will generate from your panels?
@facundosagardoy Hello. You can not use plexi glass. It expands faster than the cells in the heat and will crack the cells.
mark, excelent video! One question, it’s the same use plexi glass than tempered glass? thanks!
Hey Mark,
Great video. I’ve been looking around for a complete list of part (i.e. from solar panels to hooking it up to your house) but can’t seem to find a good set up. I want to be able to make my panels, then put together a system that has a battery back up, and be able to add more panels as I go. I just don’t know the parts I need to get a system going. I plan to make two of the panels you have next week. If you have time can you shoot me some help.

Thank you.
@mocatz187 You can find the solar cells on ebay
Mark,
Where can we purchase the 1/8 watt solar cells?
Thanks.
wow! this is very helpful! good job mark!
@LiteNRG1 No do not use a polycarbonate if you encapsulate. It expandes more than the cells do in the heat. It will crack the cells. Mark
