The Box
Posted under environment by Alexa WrightHave you ever had “the box”?
Perhaps it’s a wooden box, a shoe box or it might just be an ordinary cardboard box, but either way, it’s contains memories from your past.
The box may contain items from past relationships, pictures from high school and other random objects you find sentimental.
I had that box until recently, but then I realized it was time to let go.
There were things in there I took out and decided to keep, like a stopwatch given to me by my old track coach and a pen my uncle gave me when I was in first grade.
However, several things in that box are now only memories as well. The key to my first car: gone. What’s the point of holding on to that? I’ll never drive it again and the car itself is just a memory.
Those pictures from my senior prom are long gone, and I’m embarrassed they were in there in the first place.
Obviously I hadn’t looked in the box for who knows how long which is why it was just collecting dust along with everything else in there, make it less acceptable to hold on to it.
If you can’t get rid of that box, it’s a sign you can’t let go of your past.
Yes, our past makes us who we are today, but it does no good for these ‘memories’ to collect dust because we never revisit them.
By throwing away the box, you’re not deleting your past, you’re simply moving forward and embracing whatever is in store for the future.
Think about how pathetic I would look if I held on to those prom photos.
Again, some things are OK to hold onto. I was proud to find that stopwatch and that pen, but there are things in life we have to be willing to let go of, especially the negatives.
We don’t take pictures of the bad things that happen in life. We choose to photograph the good things, so why would we hold on to those memories?
Sometimes thinking about the good things of the past can be depressing because it makes you want to go back.
