All About Aquariums: Different Kinds For A Variety Of Fish
Posted under environment by Sophia SherbrookeAn aquarium is a diverse collection of plant and fish. Aquarists, as aquarium enthusiasts call themselves aim to reconstruct a specific geographical location. Some, on the other hand tend to concentrate on a single group of fish or aquatic plant. Whatever their choice, all aquarists have one goal, to create a well balance and attractive habitat in order that its inhabitants can thrive and survive.
The types of enthusiasm one have for building an aquarium affect the type of aquarium he or she can have. Given the wide variety of aquariums found in the market today, there is a specific type of aquarium that can be purchased and constructed based on ones needs and wants. Some aquariums can have a hexagonal shape while others have cylindrical and rectangular shapes. There are also aquariums that are short while some are quite tall. Acrylic or glass made are also available and comes in different sizes that can contain 10, 20, 29, 30, 40, 50, 55 gallons of water or larger.
The most common and basic type of aquarium is the fish bowl which only contains at least a gallon of not distilled or de-ionized drinking water. It can contain at most three fish and can be seen as part of a table arrangement in homes.
For individuals who consider aquariums as part of their hobby, two types of aquariums are available, the saltwater aquarium and the freshwater aquarium. These two cannot be combined into one because the types of fish that can be taken care of vary in each type.
Defined as a miniature ocean or marine habitat, the saltwater aquarium is being considered as a living marine laboratory since it a can house different kinds of saltwater fish, rocks as well as corals. The tanks can be Fish-Only tanks, FOWLR tanks (Fish Only with Live Rock) and Reef Tanks. Maintaining this type of aquarium also needs much time and effort as well as a large amount of money. With this type of aquarium, water salinity, temperature filtration and lighting should be regularly monitored. This is necessary in order to ensure that the inhabitants in the aquarium are always healthy and alive. Moreover, the types of fish that can be maintained in this type are mostly difficult to find and are very expensive. Given all these though, the finish product for this is always spectacular and breathtaking.
On the other hand, there is also the freshwater aquarium which is highly advised as first aquarium for beginners. Unlike the saltwater aquarium, the freshwater aquarium is a miniature habitat that mimics the ecosystem of rivers, lakes, and ponds and other water pools that can be found in land. Different kinds of freshwater fish and plants can be housed in this type of aquarium. Some of the appropriate types of fish include goldfish, guppies, neon tetra, swordtails, platies, archer fish and leopard danios. These types of fish are less colorful and ha regular shapes compares to those found in the saltwater aquarium. It can also be tropical or cold water depending on what one prefers. These types are bot easily affected by changes in temperature, lighting and salinity making them easier to maintain.
In summary, we can say that maintaining an aquarium especially a saltwater aquarium can be very expensive and tedious. However, always remember that after the hard work, you can make sure that all of it is worth it once the aquarium is finished. If you have the desire and the necessary fortitude, than by all means go for it.
