It wouldn’t seem like florists can have such a detrimental or vital impact on the carbon footprint or the environment, but a closer look reveals a deep impact throughout the world.
Within floristry there are many individual and group efforts going back into the industry and the health of the environment that the flowers and plants come from. Obviously, plants and flowers must first be grown and harvested before they can be shipped to the final destination. Any florist bearing a Fair Trade symbol is actively involved in helping both social causes as well as environmental efforts.
The Fair Trade symbol indicates a vested interest in the farms, the farming methods, and the farmers who are dedicated to bringing the flowers to your home. The symbol is a certification of fairness as well as one of environmental awareness. Sustainable farming methods are high on the list of the florists that have gone through the steps to get certified. All farmers in the field are taught the value of preservation, additional crop rotation, and the effects of hazardous sprays on the plants to be shipped.
There are also florists that participate in the carbon footprint programmes to help offset the carbon footprint left behind thanks to shipping and other aspects of the florist industry. It is a complex element within a system that was once stripped raw through mannerisms of farming and shipping that were wasteful and highly contributory to the destruction of the atmosphere. Thanks to carbon footprint programmes, there can be a significant impact created by purchasing flowers through ecologically responsible florists.
Floristry has long been plagued with numerous afflictions when it comes to the human and environmental conditions which the crops are grown and reaped. Today’s industry is a much more environmentally aware and much more socially aware, making it a much more viable industry to sustain over long periods of time. More people can do more good by supporting these florists than they realize.
Floristry has come a long way when it comes to finding better ways to make sure that the overall product does not come at the cost of the workers in the field or the environments that these plants and flowers are grown in. By being able to address these issues, the quality of the plants and flowers are much better and consumers are much happier with the overall product.
While a seemingly innocuous florist industry can make a huge impact on the carbon footprint and the environment, the buying power of conscientious consumers can make an even bigger impact. When you make environmentally aware buying decisions you are also making humane and socially aware buying decisions. These aspects all tie into each other when it comes to floristry and other similar industries.
With a greater awareness of what floristry can offer the ecological and humanitarian efforts, more florists are picking up on the trend and finding better ways to do business that improve the quality of the final product. After all, isn’t that a huge part of why we do these things? If we can be responsible and fair to the world and the people in it while offering a much better product, we all win. There are many benefits to looking at the carbon footprint and the environment no matter what the industry. When we all participate everyone and everything end of better for the effort.
