Carbon Offset - A Great Way To Save The Environment

Posted under environment

As the planet struggles under rising levels of air pollution and global warming, carbon offset is acting as a saviour by motivating firms and governments to cut their carbon emissions.

The unregulated emission of hazardous greenhouse gases is checked by the carbon offset concept, which does so by giving inducement for making use of alternative and renewable energy, reforestation projects etc.. The Kyoto Protocol, an international agreement signed by almost all countries in 2005 puts limits on emission by member countries depending on whether they are emerging or developed, which in turn governs emissions by various industries in each of these nations.

The Protocol makes it mandatory for industries emitting above the permitted limit of carbon dioxide to bring down their emissions to prescribed levels, or they should purchase carbon credits certificates which can be transacted in the market, or alternatively pay a penalty for the emissions, which is known as carbon tax. Carbon credits, which came much earlier than carbon offset, are extremely popular and cost effective options for companies, with one credit permitting the buyer to release 1000 kilograms of carbon dioxide into the environment. Large organisations are catching up with the global carbon-neutral campaign and purchasing carbon credits to make an impact on customers, investors and corporate partners.

Another innovative method, carbon offset, has opened up an excellent economic chance, particularly in the developing countries, as the system provides smooth financing for green projects that are designed to help decrease the overall carbon footprint in the world. It greatly helps in popularizing renewable and eco-friendly energy options like tidal energy and wind energy, and in funding projects on nature conservation and reforestation.

Apart from the companies, even ordinary persons are contributing to the environment by purchasing carbon offset and encouraging others to do the same. Purchasing carbon offset is simple and can be conveniently implemented on the internet through one of the several carbon offset provider websites; however, it should be ensured that your money is making real influence through good projects.

Although carbon offset is a great alternative we must also remember that we need to go a step further by making small environment supportive decisions in our everyday lives. Small steps like turning off electrical devices and appliances when not in use, substituting fossil fuels by renewable fuels like biodiesel, and making use of LED lighting and low-energy bulbs can actually help a lot in decreasing overall emissions.

Carbon offset is not yet a popular word for an average person. Awareness of the same by means of relevant education on the issue is the way forward towards a healthy and sustainable environment.

How Book Recycling Improves The Environment

Posted under environment

A growing number of companies and people are doing there best to reduce the amount of paper waste they produce. Book recycling is becoming more and more common as companies and people are converting to computers. Whether it’s reading an e-book, an instruction manual, or looking up research material, you may not need these types of books as much as in the past. This is where book recycling comes into play.

In 2008, a record-high 57.4 percent of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) paper and paperboard products represent the largest portion of our municipal waste. Paper and paperboard products account for 33% of all the waste collected.

There are a lot of recycling programs out there, but how do you find one that does book recycling? Most recycling programs charge a subscription fee or are heavily subsidized by tax money and they may not even recycle books. However there are a handful of companies who currently do not charge any money for book recycling.

Why is it so difficult to recycle books? Hardbound books are hard to recycle because of their heavy glue content, vinyl and low fiber content; most unused or obsolete hardback books end up in the landfill. Under some cases, these books are recycled through mulching and becoming compost or insulation. There are companies that take the extra time and resources to process these books and actually recycle them to be made back into paper!

Listed below are a few familiar products that are made from recycled paper:

Masking tape

Dust masks

Bandages

Coffee filters

Lamp shades

Insulation

You can reduce your environmental footprint by recycling your damaged or obsolete books. Book recycling can help the environment by: reducing energy and water consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, saving considerable landfill space, and decreasing the need for disposal such as landfill or incineration which decreases the amount of CO2 produced.

Building a Wind Generator - 4 Tips Everyone Should Know

Posted under environment

Although there are many companies who will come install a wind generator for you, they can prove to be very expensive indeed. With the troubled economy many people are choosing to take the cheaper route by building their own wind generator, which is easier to do than you probably think.

What you may not realize is that if you build it yourself it may only cost you between $100 - 200 to do so, rather than the thousands that some companies charge. Simply put, building a wind generator can prove a very wise investment indeed. You will in fact probably find that your electricity bills over the next 3 years will be reduced by thousands of dollars.

What you may also have not discovered until now is that when you are thinking of building a wind generator for your home is that the parts you need can easily be bought online or at your local hardware store. So if you were concerned that getting the parts was going to be difficult then think again.

Now before you consider building a wind generator for your home, there are a number of factors that will need to be taken into consideration beforehand. In this article we look at just what some of these factors are. If you keep these in mind before, during, and after you have constructed your system then you can be confident in knowing that it will last for many years to come.

Tip 1: The Base - The base of your wind generator should be one that provides enough support on which it can stand. The best material to make the base with is concrete. This will allow the supports of the wind generator to be held in place firmly no matter how strong and fast the wind blows.

Tip 2: The Tower - It is best if you can afford to construct the tower from metal, but again if money is tight then go for the thickest, strongest plywood you can. This will ensure that not only is your tower sturdy but is also able to cope with all kinds of weather conditions.

Tip 3: The Blades - You can make the blades for your wind generator yourself, but ensure that they can move easily and won’t be hindered by any other part of the construction. In fact, for those who are building a wind generator for the first time, purchasing premade quality blades will be your best option as this will ensure that they are able to create the amount of energy needed to meet one’s power requirements.

If you are intending to make your blades from plywood then you need to use strong wood to make them from. Plus, make sure that the size of the blades are in proportion to the height of the tower. Too large and the tower will break because they are too heavy and too small and they won’t be able to create enough energy to meet your requirements.

Tip 4: The Gearbox - When you are thinking of building a wind generator you need to pay close attention to what the gearbox is to be constructed from. If you use inferior quality materials or equipment this can result in the blades being unable to turn as freely as they should and so the amount of energy they produce is reduced. If you decide to buy a gearbox instead of building one, make sure you purchase a complete working gearbox that is specifically designed for installation into wind generator system.

Small Scale Wind Energy Discovered

Posted under solar power

Though we may just be starting on it and learning it, harnessing wind for energy is not a new phenomenon for the man kind. We only need to look at our history to know that this has happened before. Our ancestors have used these renewable sources of energy for water in faraway areas and even extracting the grains out of the crops.

According to the historical records, vertical wind power was used by the Egyptians to grind their wheat about 3,000 years ago. These days many companies are thinking of utilizing these kind of vertical windmills on small scales. These are particularly useful in places where the wind flow is not steady or the wind is constantly shifting direction.

The turbine used in this endeveours does not endanger the bats or the birds since it has a different kind of rotation and design. Moreover, in such cases, a windmill of a mere capacity of three kilowatts is sufficient for the power generation for one house. Unlike the horizontal ones, its also not noisy, does not require a lot of area or height!

Some of these designs are quite artistic in nature. A specific kind of model has become quite popular in the UK and can be found in different places. Charging points are being set up adjacent to the vertical towers by Mercedes Benz in collaboration with the makers of these units. This will help in generating power for a yearly mileage of about 30,000 miles for their new electric car called the Smart fortwo.

Jay Leno has installed a 500-watt unit in his garage and a larger 10kw version in his 17,000 square foot garage. While the initial price and installation costs are still a tad high ($20,000), supply and demand will eventually force the price in line with residential owner’s needs. Leno has many ideas that have been put into place. You can find these through the Popular Mechanics website.

Not just targeted toward residential areas, the vertical turbine is being put to use on rooftops of hotels everywhere from London to New Zealand. Recently, a new company presented its model at the US Botanical Garden in Washington, that had been independently tested in Utah, bringing rave reviews. Still relatively new, this small (many under six feet in height) offer feasible options that many thought there would never be available to them.

Another version of the vertical windmill that is based on sailing engineering. The vanes on the turbine are covered in solar cells so together, solar and wind work as one in creating all of the power you may ever need. Patents and awards have been market for the past decade and new operations are moving worldwide. If you are sold on the idea of wind or solar but didn’t want a monster of a turbine close by or your rooftop covered in expensive, heavy solar panels, this combination could work for you.

Its quite an exciting time as people are delving more into the past and understanding the ways of harnessing these renewable energy options. A lot of new inventions are taking place which can be explored in the websites based on green energy. The Germans are quite ahead of every one else when it comes to promotion of the wind energy. You don’t need to compromise on anything that doesn’t sound real since in the near future you will be spoilt for choices in the market.

How To Solar Power Your Property Now

Posted under environment

For centuries we have used the sun’s natural energy to our advantage. For example, it has been used in ancient times to provide natural lighting in temples, for photosynthesis and natural heating for growing crops, to desalinize and purify water, and it has been magnified and intensified to heat thermal power plants.

But, more importantly it can also be used on a domestic level, as a clean source energy for various households.

Currently, there are 4 general ways you can use solar power at home:

Solar Cookers:

A solar cooker is an extremely healthy, inexpensive and clean alternative to cooking your food. Though solar cookers have been used a lot to desalinize water in poor arid countries, many 1st world countries are adopting them in summer for cooking their food.

With solar cooking, the oven has a number of reflective panels arranged in a parabola, where they focus the sun on a single pot, in which the food is placed. Depending on the design, the cooker can make a variety of dishes from bread to steamed vegetables to fried eggs to a roast beef, and it typically caters for up to 5 people.

The one problem with a solar oven is that it takes rather long to cook the food - up to 4 times longer. But if you are prepared to wait for a healthy, wholesome, energy saving meal to be ready, then a solar cooker is a good idea.

Solar Water Geyser:

Thanks to extensive research and development, a solar water geyser is an affordable and clean alternative to using the typical gas or electric powered boiler to heat your water.

How it works is water passes through solar panels that convert the sun’s energy into heat, that is then used to heat the water. This water is then stored in a cylinder for use in the home. With the larger solar water heater, the water can get extremely hot and has to combined with cold water to cool it down.

Passive Solar Living:

What people do not realize is how much power they consume just to heat and light their homes. And if they could just see the benefit of using natural lighting and heating from the sun, they could save a lot of power and money.

With this form of solar power employment, sunlight is used as a natural heat and light source. The ideal passive solar home would have large double-glazed windows, with the length of the house facing the sun, and designed with materials that absorb the sun’s light and radiate heat even after the sun has set.

And like the Romans used the sun to light up their temples, careful placing of windows and mirrors in our homes can increase natural lighting, helping us reduce the need for electric lighting.

A natural air conditioning solution would be to plant deciduous trees on the sun-facing side of your home. This would provide cool shade in summer, but allow warm sunlight though in winter.

A solar chimney can be installed for ventilation, where the air in the chimney is heated by the sun and rises, causing fresh, cool air to rush in through the home and up the chimney.

Solar Electric Power:

More accurately called photovoltaic power, this is the most commonly known way to solar power your home. For this system to work properly, a number solar panels need to be facing the sun to produce electricity.

How sunshine becomes electricity, is as the sun shines on the panels, the cells become charged and generate a current that is then stored in batteries. From there, the current is passed through an inverter, where it can then be used to power your household, and even be fed back into the power grid.

The good thing about solar power is that as long the sun is shining, you will get free power, technology is bringing down the costs and there is little effect on the environment. What’s more is, if you cannot afford to spend thousands of dollars on an expert system, you can learn to build your own solar panel system for a tenth of the price.

And these are the 4 ways how to solar power your home. If your are willing to learn how to use these methods at home, you will not only be living a greener life, but you will reduce your power needs and costs, receive renewable energy tax incentives, and lower the burden on our vanishing energy sources. So take the initiative and enjoy the sun’s free, clean, abundant energy now.

DIY Cut Monthly Electricity Costs on Lighting

Posted under solar power

This article is the first of a list of practical things you can do to save lots of money on your monthly electric consumption bills with DIY cut monthly electricity costs. You could get yourself some new green products or even take you and your family on a mini vacation.

The abbreviation CFL stands for Compact Fluorescent Lamp, sometimes known as a circular fluorescent bulb. CFL and incandescent bulbs each generate light in different ways.

Thomas Edison was the inventor of incandescent light bulbs and since his invention the general principle of them is still the same. When electricity is connected to both of the sides of a carbon filament, it gets hot and light is produced. In CFL bulbs, as with older fluorescent tubes, a closed glass tube is coated with a fluorescent coating that glows when current is applied to the argon and mercury vapour inside.

You might’ve heard how the incandescent bulbs work but if you are using the bulb more than a couple of times a year, your money is being wasted, no matter how cheap the bulb was. If you want to save money look for the green products. Saving around 75% in costs is the newer Energy Star compact fluorescent lights compared with the incandescent bulbs. In a period of 6 months A CFL bulb will pay for itself and save you about $30 per bulb over the period of its lifetime!

There are different choices for the color of the light omitted from the CFL bulbs these days. This can really enhance the mood of the room, home office or family room. The CFL bulb colors offer a variety of choices from daylight blue to warm yellow. If you like the mood that incandescent light bulbs produce then going for a warmer CFL light would suit you better. Some people are sensitive to bright white light so it’s a good idea to remember that when choosing bulb colors, the bluer lights can create this harshness.

If you see a K on the bulb packaging, that K or Kelvin rating, will give you the “temperature” of the bulb. If you want a warm/yellow bulb look for a Kelvin rating of 2700k-3000k. If you’re looking for a cool white bulb look for a rating of 3500K-4100K. And a Daylight blue bulb is a rating of 5000K-6500K.

To replace 40 watt incandescent bulbs, use 9-13 watt CFL bulbs to get the same results. For a 60 watt incandescent bulb use a 13-15 watt CFL. For a 75 watt incandescent use an 18-25 watt CFL. And look for the 23-30 watt CFLs if you want to replace 100 watt incandescent bulbs.

All your used fluoro bulbs should be attempted to be recycled. In some states disposing of mercury filled bulbs with solid waste rubbish is illegal. They do this as about 5 milligrams of mercury is in each CFL bulb.

When you want to recycle your used CFL green products, places like ACE Hardware, Orchard (OSH), IKEA and Home Depot will accept and properly dispose of the used CFL bulbs.

If you are looking for decorative lights, Energy Star qualified light emitting diode bulbs (LED) are a great alternative. These bulbs create the exact same amount of light as their equivalent incandescent bulb and use up to 90% less energy! I have heard that the power needed for only one 7 watt incandescent bulb could be used to power up to 140 LEDs!

So try the LED decorative lights for the outside and the give CFLs a go for the inside. These will reduce your carbon footprint and save you lots of money at the same time.

Where do Green Job Recruiters Fit into Your Prospects?

Posted under environment

If you’re headed into the green industry, you’ve probably heard of or even spoken with green job recruiters. Because you are intently focused on landing a green collar job, this might seem like the best way to improve your overall prospects. It’s not necessarily a bad idea to touch base, find out about the company and what jobs might be available, but while you are on your fishing expedition be careful about being talked into signing any contracts. Use the first time you meet with a green job recruiter (which is likely to be on campus or at a job fair) as a method of getting your questions answered.

It is not unusual for a green job recruiter to stroke a few egos. After all, they want you to talk to them and you want them to talk to you. There is a quiet stand off going on between the two of you as you both extract information. The more you learn about the positions that are available and whether you might be a good fit the more empowered you are to continue your search on your own. Remember that right now that scientific positions are the most heavily sought after.

Whether you have gone through an entire degree or you are one of the displaced, green jobs are not as easy to get as one might think. Political and social movements keep looking to the green job market to become as powerful as the stock market once was. Get informed as early as possible when you are speaking to the green job recruiter. This way you know immediately if you can fill the shoes of the green industry.

Science and research positions are the most common. While there will be skilled and unskilled labor openings, this will not be an option for quite some time to come. We need to see the mass construction and installation of these alternative energy sources in order to start blanket hiring. Green building jobs will improve this situation.

The most valuable aspect of a green job recruiter is their ability to put you in touch with a direct line to positions that are open. Some experts say that even if you give your resume to the recruiter, you send one in independently once you know your education and experience might qualify you for the job. Submit your resume online, especially if you post it to specific sites that are literally trolling for green job talent. Search engine optimization of your resume is recommended.

If you do speak at length with a green job recruiter, bear in mind that he or she is there to connect you to the company. But the company also wants the recruiter to strike up a good deal. Be just as knowledgeable about the potential salary as you are about the potential job and you will be in a much better position. Don’t shoot for the sky, but be aware of what makes a good deal.

You can learn a great deal from your interactions from a green job recruiter. Part and full time positions may be available, just as intern positions may very well be part of the overall option.

While this is common practice for some positions, you need the time to investigate other options in the alternative energy job market. Always be sure that you have researched the companies that are sending recruiters around to various schools and job fairs. Knowing the company can give you more invaluable information for your search for employment.

Things To Take Into Account Before Buying Carbon Offset

Posted under environment

With growing knowledge of the threats of global warming, instruments like carbon credits and carbon offset are turning more and more popular with individuals as well as companies as a successful means to safeguard our planet.

If you want to compensate for the degrading effects your activities have had on nature, you can purchase a specific amount of carbon offset in order to nullify the harm caused by you. The money you invest on a carbon offset will help fund green projects like wind farms that produce energy without causing harmful emissions.

Before going for carbon offset, you have to understand how your actions and way of living are leading to greenhouse gas emissions. Typical activities that account for a substantial proportion of carbon emissions for most individuals are driving cars, air travel, and household energy.

Once you have made a list of all these actions, you must consider which of those you can lessen or completely do away with. Such an action oriented initiative would reduce the adverse effects that you bring on the environment. You can contribute towards a greener environment by insulating your house when using artificial heating or cooling, driving only as much as essential and by using energy efficient lights in your home.

After you have considered the measures you can take to reduce emissions, you must calculate your remaining carbon footprint, i.e., the amount of emissions caused by your remaining actions that are beyond your reasonable control. The method of calculating this footprint changes from one action to another, but there are a lot of online calculators which can help you in the matter.

Carbon offset providers offset carbon emission from your actions by lowering emissions in any part of the globe through your buying of offset. There are numerous ways of reducing emissions and you can select a scheme from the ones provided by the offset providers for your investment. But you should be cautious before making the investment. You should not put your money in projects with dubious credentials as that might ultimately cause wastage of your funds. There are a number of bureaus that conduct rigorous quality tests to approve projects and it is always advisable to go for a project which has got such a third party certification.

Finally, you should gather adequate information on the topic from different sources. Through research, you will come to know the authentic offset providers and the types of projects that are suitable for investment, and you can also carefully monitor how the scheme you have invested in is performing.
