Benefits Of Carbon Credits

Posted under environment by Patricia Khan

The Kyoto Protocol specifically states that countries adhering to its terms must take a major initiative in reducing emissions of greenhouse gases. Carbon offset and carbon trading are the two ways to reduce emissions, as was suggested by the protocol.

Certain financial instruments called carbon credits are sold and purchased in markets worldwide in the carbon trading method. One ton of carbon dioxide or a similar amount of other greenhouse gases can be discharged into the air by anyone who purchases one carbon credit. Purchasing and selling carbon credits helps in effectively dealing with global warming, and the system is advantageous in a lot of ways.

Trading in carbon credits helps limit the indiscriminate emissions of greenhouse gases throughout the world. Organizations responsible for environmental pollution are made to pay for their activities while ones taking positive steps are incentivized. Hence this strategy forces companies and governments to adopt environment friendly methods that control the release of greenhouse gases.

A free trading mechanism for carbon credits in the global market allows industries to easily follow the system. Trading is simple in this system as the rules and methodologies are transparent and uncomplicated, and this accounts for its popularity and effectiveness.

More than the penalty awarded to erring companies, the rewards and appreciation given to green firms is what makes this method so well-known and exclusive. This means that firms releasing greenhouse gases within prescribed limits will be encouraged to outperform themselves in reduction of emissions so that they can profit by the sale of carbon credits in the world market. Thus, the environment is gradually made pollution-free by this system.

Last, but probably the most important advantage of the carbon credits system is that it has gained acceptance from most of the countries. Inability to garner enough support and acceptance lead to the failure of many initiatives. As carbon credits have gained global acceptance, they can go a long way to ensure that our environment is made pollution free.
