Much of air pollution comes from humans introducing into the air, chemicals, particles, or even biological matter that causes harm to living organisms. Found in the air are many foreign substances that can impair the health of humans, other animals, and plants, and we call these substances air pollutants.
Air pollution is caused when, either these substances are released as a direct result of a process, or when pollutants are caused by interaction with another pollutant in the air. These types are referred to as primary and secondary pollutants and they are both very bad news for your health. An example of primary air pollution is when a car is running, and as a result of this process produces exhaust, which releases carbon monoxide.
It can also be caused by an erupting volcano releasing ash into the air. Even something you think of as normal, like ash, is considered a pollutant. Interestingly the ash produced from a barbecue grill or a chimney, is also considered air pollution. However when the pollutants do not arise from doing something, and instead come from interacting with other pollutants in the air to form a new substance, this is a secondary source of air pollution.
Air pollution is a serious cause for concern, especially when it comes to your health. This terrible problem is getting worse every day because the source for air pollution is things we do each day, like manufacturing things, and driving to work.
If pollution continues going as it the current rate we will see severe health problems for us, and even the next generations, and this is a very scary thought. Air pollution can cause respiratory disease and even death. Although we usually think of big nasty factories as our worst enemy, some of the most awful sources of air pollution are the types that are moving, like automobiles.
For this reason many people who have a very long way to commute to work, use things like car pools. Car pools help to keep some extra pollution for getting into the air, so the more people not driving each day, the better. Little steps like this one, done by everyone, would drasitcally reduce the amounts of pollutants released into our air each day.
Everyone has dreams of breathing pollution free air and getting rid of the bad effects that the pollutants can cause like respratory disease. If we ever want to see this day, we must all work together to make our air a little cleaner each and every day.
About 71% of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. Out of this, only 2.8 percent is fresh water that can be used for drinking purposes. With teeming millions of human lives and a sizable number of other life forms needing fresh water to sustain themselves, this tiny fraction of freshwater may not be sufficient in the near future. One third of the Earth’s surface may be covered by water, yet mankind has no choice but to worry about the supply of potable water in the near future. Using the major water bodies as dumping grounds for all our refuse has polluted nearly every available source. Coleridge had so aptly said, “Water water everywhere, not a drop to drink”.
We are surrounded by an untapped source of pure water that most have overlooked. This invisible and immense source of pure water is our atmosphere, which envelopes us in 4,000 cubic miles of water that we haven’t, till recently, even deemed a viable source of pure drinking water. Apart from being renewable, it also has the potential of being the biggest, cost-effective source of pure drinking water.
In most of the world’s populated areas, the air holds enough moisture to provide pure drinking water to all who live there. For poor countries, as well as some arid ones with minimal supplies of fresh water, a viable solution would be to generate water from air. Peace keeping forces stationed in underdeveloped countries have found this technology that converts air to water to be a boon -one that helps them overcome great difficulties in obtaining supplies during such operations. This is true for disaster relief teams as well. For example, after earthquakes, these disaster relief teams need to combat fast spreading water-related diseases like dysentery and allergies. A technology that can create pure drinking water from air is truly a blessing at such times.
This technology is already in commercial production and generally come in two affordable categories - residential and commercial. Creating pure drinking water from air is commercially viable as it costs half as much as bottled water and be used in cruise ships, hospitals, public buildings and offices. It also maximizes production of pure water with minimum consumption of energy. Creating water from air is finding uses in agricultural fields as well, using drip irrigation systems.
Apart from producing pure drinking water, it also has some other obvious benefits such as the avoiding the usage of non bio degradable plastic for bottled water and saving transportation costs.
Another immediate advantage of obtaining water from air is that we avoid the toxic wastes from contaminated groundwater. It is hardly possible to find any source of freshwater that does not contain traces of toxic chemicals. Even the chlorine that is used to purify water and remove disease-causing microbes is harmful to us. One such water purification system, that uses this technology, is Dewpointe. It also acts as a water dispenser with a feature that lets you adjust the cold water temperature and serves instant hot water.

Employing the oceans for energy is still a very young science although the use of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion is not new - dating back as it does to 1881. Sadly only one place in the world is actually running a plant using and studying this technology and that is The Natural Energy Laboratory on the island of Hawaii. The expenditure needed to finance OTEC as a potential alternative energy source demands more serious investigation than ever before. It is difficult to get the costs down to a reasonable level because of the processes presently used to drive OTEC. However, as it presently would need to be set up with our current technologies, OTEC plants would have the capacity for disrupting and perhaps damaging the local environment.
Three types of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion exist:
Propane which is an example of a low-boiling point liquid is what the “Closed Cycle OTEC” uses to act as an intermediate fluid. Warm sea water is pumped into the Ocean Thermal Energy Plants reaction chamber which heats up the gas (propane) to the point where it turns into a liquid. rotates large turbines. Cold sea water then reverses the process, reducing the temperature of the liquid, turning it back into a gas.
It is already taken that intermediate fluid is used in closed cycling and even though there is no such thing involved in the Open Cycle, still, “Open Cycle Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion” isn’t that poles apart from closed cycling. In this kind of OTEC format, the main driver of the engine’s turbine is the sea water itself. Warm surface water is converted into a low pressure vapor by in a vacuum. The low-pressure vapor is released in a focused area and it has the power to drive the turbine. The benefit of this system is that once the water has been used and electricity generated, salt is removed (as part of the process), then it is pumped to much lower depths where it cools down ready to be used as drinking water.
“Hybrid Cycle Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion” is really just a theory for the time being. The theory attempts to explain how we can utilise the worlds oceans to provide energy for the planet. The theory of Hybrid Cycling involves two sub-theories. One of these involves using the closed cycle technology to produce electricity which will feed the open cycle system vacuum. Using just one open cycle is not enough to create a massive amount of desalinated, potable water so the second component seeks to integrate two open cyclings that can produce twice as much as with just one.
A closed cycle OTEC plant can not only be used for producing electricity but also for treating chemicals. Moreover, refrigeration and air conditioning are other areas to which the used of Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion plants with both open cycling and close cycling kinds can be very beneficial by pumping up cold deep sea water. The water around the plants during the process can also be used to help promote fish farming projects as well. We certainly can derive an array of products and services by using this alternative energy source.
Every time you flush the toilet or empty the tub or sink, the water disappears. Have you ever wondered where that water goes? If you live in a large city, it probably goes to a sewage treatment center or sewer. In Canada, a quarter of the population lives in smaller communities or rural areas where such systems are not set up. For these Canadians, and many other people all over the world, a septic system is used to process and discard of wastewater. A septic tank treats the wastewater and releases the usable portion back into the ground. Septic systems are also referred to as onsite wastewater systems.
How Does a Septic Tank Work? A septic tank receives the used water created from regular household use and treats it until it is at a safe level. Then the tank returns the usable portion known as the effluent to the groundwater system
How is the Septic Tank Made? Septic tanks are watertight structures usually made from concrete, fiberglass or polyethylene. Historically, septic tanks have also bee made out of materials such as wood or steel. If you live in a very old home and you suspect it may have a steel septic tank, be mindful that rust may deposit on your tank. If this is the case, you will have to eventually replace the tank. In the event that your home has a wood septic tank, it is eventually going to rot if it is not rotting already. In this case, you will also need to replace your septic tank.
Septic tanks are generally buried underground, and its size will vary on the size and water treatment requirements of your particular home. Tanks may have one or two compartments, depending on where and when it was installed. The septic tank basically consists of a holding tank, which as aforementioned is manufactured out of concrete, fiberglass or polyethylene. The septic tank, (or holding tank) retains all the solid waste extracted from the household water waste. The septic tank is connected to a system of absorption commonly known as a leach field. The leach field then disposes of the effluent liquid (water) into the soil.
An Outline of the Septic System Below is a general outline of the main components of any septic system: - Sewer line, this is the main waste line leading from your home’s plumbing to the onsite septic system - Septic tank, usually buried underground only feet away from the house, the septic tank receives the liquid and solid waste and retains the solids in the tank. Baffles (or barriers) at the inlet and outlet of the tank slow down the flow of liquid passing through the septic tank and stop solid waste from escaping the tank. Tanks with two compartments have extra baffles and thus do an even more effective job.
- Leaching system, also referred to as a ‘drainfield,’ the leaching system is basically an absorption system. The leaching system distributes the effluent into the soil around it. There are a variety of different ways to set up a leaching system, but the most common is a series of underground perforated pipes buried in trenches with good drainage. The type of drainage system used will depend greatly on the type of soil that surrounds the property and the amount of space available for the leaching system.
Now that you have a basic understanding of the components of a septic system and how they work together, not only do you know how a septic tank is made, but also how it works. If you own a home with a septic tank you understand it a little better now and you can go on to read about how to maintain your septic system.
Modern kitchens are a sight to behold. We often see gorgeous kitchen makeovers on the television and in the internet where an outdated and simple kitchen was transformed from drab to fabulous. An idea of a kitchen makeover always sounds exciting and achieving it with a minimal budget sounds even more tempting. Kitchens being a prime part of the household entail a lot of space planning and design coordination.
Concrete Polishing is a modern choice in finishing kitchen floors and countertops. Gone are the days when one is faced with only one choice which is ceramic tiles, of finishing his/her own kitchen floor and countertop. Countertops just like the kitchen floor needs to be stain resistant, non-porous and easy to clean. An excellent surface material for these descriptions of usages is a polished concrete surface.
A countertop is a place in the kitchens work system that includes the preparation of the food. It is imperative that a countertop should remain clean and germ-free. An excellent countertop is one that does not stain, does not absorb water or liquid from the food, one that is hard and does not breaks or chips easily. Some countertops are made of granite which is an expensive choice.
Kitchen flooring needs to have the same treatment as that of the countertop. It also has to be clean, germ-free and pleasant to look and work at. A polished kitchen floor will just do the trick as it shows itself in a high-gloss manner that is easy to maintain and clean. Designing the kitchen floor using polished concrete is not a problem as there wide varieties of tints to choose from. By working on these tints, one is faced with the possibility of having a ceramic tiled-like floor.
Modern Kitchens are becoming more famous because of the innovativeness in finishes and furnishings. A polished concrete surface when used as a floor finish and a countertop finish is sure to last over time. Concrete Polishing in modern kitchens is surely a wise choice for everyone.

Kitchen makeovers as often seen on television and Internet is truly exciting and challenging. A modern kitchen is even more effective when using concrete polishing as a floor finish. Mercie Hallow, an Interior Designer that worked on various kitchen makeovers testifies that concrete polishing will do the best trick in renovating a floor and countertop from drab to fab!
An unlimited supply of pure drinking water is one of the basic necessities of life. Even in ancient times, people have tried to purify water using various water treatment methods. Most of these water purification systems substantially improved the taste of water. However, it was only around the early 19th century, that scientists discovered the presence of disease causing microbes in water and realized that water was the primary cause of the common epidemics of those times. Since then, numerous water purification systems have seen the light of day, such as: reverse osmosis, distillation and UV water filtration. The current flood of research and media attention shows, however, that there is a growing uneasiness about the traces of harmful toxins found in drinking water, especially bottled water, that has been purified using these methods.
Almost all sources of potable water have been contaminated by the dumping of toxic wastes - a huge to price to pay for our industrial growth. Pesticides, sewage, and toxic mineral wastes from industries have left the surface and ground water unfit for human consumption. The irony is that the very minerals like chlorine and fluoride, which are used for water treatment purposes, have been found to be carcinogenic. Lead, a harmful mineral, finds its way to our drinking water through the pipes, fittings and the plumbing systems. If we continue to use ground and surface water for drinking purposes, it is going to be hazardous.
This pitiable condition of surface water has forced scientists to turn towards atmospheric water for a feasible and cost effective solution. Finally, we have a technology that can actually create water from air. This technology uses atmospheric moisture to create pure drinking water. All that needs to be done is to connect the unit to a power supply, and that’s it - it does the rest. This is also a commercially practical option since a home water purification system that uses this technology capable of producing 1 gallon of 99.99% pure drinking water at a cost of half a dollar.
The home water purification appliances that use this technology can normally create up to 12 gallons of 99.99% pure drinking water per day. The appliances built for commercial use can create up to 24 gallons of pure drinking water everyday. One such appliance created by Atmospheric Water Systems, Inc., uses a four-stage water filtration system in order to remove the slightest of impurities.
An in-built “Antibiotic Air-Filtration System” removes microbes from the incoming air while another patented system maintains a zero bacteria count. To make this device fool proof, there is a UV water filtration system that removes the remaining impurities. The unit also serves as a water dispenser that can supply hot and cold water on demand. The hot water tap comes with a special child proof gear.
This green technology is eco-friendly, uses minimal energy and can finally help us put an end to those millions of plastic bottles used to supply bottled water.

The North woods of Minnesota is more than the pristine beauty of lakes, forests and eagles flying overhead. To me it’s Summer Camp! Swift Nature Camp is so much more than another home with another family.
Why is it so much more? It is filled with encouragement, love, acceptance, and real friends that will be part of your camp memories for life. Your counselors are great people to look up to they act as parents, older siblings and more. You may even end up looking at them as siblings. Your Uniqueness is celebrated and Acceptance is everywhere. This is what makes Swift Nature Camp place that i can not wait to return to each summer.
When you’re not on canoe or backpack trips and just at camp, there is so much to do, you can never fit it all in. Other fun activities to do at camp are archery, swimming, fishing, boating, tubing, and riflery. I loved being active all day. What is real neat is rather you are a beginner or an expert in an area its ok. The counselors help you get better. All activities are noncompetitive and so we all support each other, rather than worry who is best.
I’ll never forget the great out of camp trips we took like the Superior Hiking Trail. What an adventure! I loved being in the of the forest. overlooking Lake Superior. The wildlife was wonderful too we saw hawks, bald eagles, & deer. This is why I love Minnesota Camps
Life in a cabin is about learning from others and with others. It is becoming a team of understanding. Sure, sometimes we had our fights or minor issues, but almost always they were resolved and we grew closer as a team for them.
I always loved the Nature Center. It is a great place to learn about Nature and the Environment. The Director is always fun and teaches us loads of cool things but its not at all like school. There are all sorts of animals that are fun to observe and hold. One day they even made me feel a little more comfortable when I was homesick.
I plan on going back to Swift Nature Camp for all these reasons. If you come for just one summer, I know you will feel as I do. So, I’ll see yawl in the North woods of Minnesota this summer!
